Mississippi TANF cash assistance for single parents and families (2026)
The Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS) pays a single parent with two children no more than $260 a month in TANF cash assistance. Applicants must pass a $1,074 gross and a $581 net income test, keep resources at $2,000 or less, and enroll in the TANF Work Program.

Key takeaways
- The most Mississippi TANF pays a parent with two children is $260 a month: $200 for the first person, $36 for the second and $24 for each additional person 2.
- MDHS pays 60% of the gap between your net income and the need standard ($581 for three people), capped at $260, so even small earnings lower the check 32.
- Resources must be $2,000 or less; the home and most vehicles do not count 5.
- The lifetime limit is 60 months, but a work-eligible adult who is not assigned to a TANF Work Program activity can be cut off after 24 months 6.
- A child born more than 10 months after the family's first benefit month is generally not added to the grant under Mississippi's family benefit cap 6.

Income limits
TANF (gross income test): 185% of the Mississippi TANF need standard (Table I), effective TANF Policy Manual Table I, revised Dec. 1, 2024.2
| Household | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Per month | $627 | $851 | $1,074 | $1,298 | $1,522 | $1,746 | $1,970 | $2,194 |
Families also have to pass a net income test (see the table in the guide). MDHS lists $2,417 for 9 people and $2,641 for 10.
Mississippi runs TANF as a state-administered program. MDHS eligibility workers in each county office decide cases under the TANF Policy Manual (Volume III), which is filed as Mississippi Administrative Code Title 18, Part 13. MDHS case managers and Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) WIN Job Centers run the TANF Work Program 27. The grant amounts are written into state law, Miss. Code § 43-17-5, and do not change from year to year 152. House Bill 121, a 2026 bill to raise them, died in committee on Feb. 3, 2026, so the $260 figure still applies in October 2026.
How the $200 + $36 + $24 formula sets Mississippi’s grant
State law caps the payment at $200 for the first person in the budget, $36 for the second and $24 for each person after that 152. Under Table II, MDHS pays 60% of the family’s “unmet need” (the 100% need standard minus net income) and stops at the legal maximum. The result is rounded down to a whole dollar, and no payment is issued if it comes to less than $10 32.
| People in the budget | Net income limit (100% need standard) | Maximum monthly payment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $339 | $200 |
| 2 | $460 | $236 |
| 3 | $581 | $260 |
| 4 | $702 | $284 |
| 5 | $823 | $308 |
| 6 | $944 | $332 |
| 7 | $1,065 | $356 |
| 8 | $1,186 | $380 |
For more than 8 people, add $121 per person to the net standard. The gross limit is 185% of that figure, rounded down 2. For three people, $1,074 is 185% of $581.
Here is how the 60% rule works for a parent with two children. With no income, 60% of $581 is $348, so the family gets the $260 cap. The full $260 continues until net income passes about $147 a month. Now suppose the parent earns $500 a month and pays nothing for child care. MDHS subtracts the $90 work expense, leaving $410. The gap between $581 and $410 is $171, and 60% of that is $102.60, so the monthly check is $102 43. For the month you apply, the payment is prorated from the date of authorization, or from the 30th day after you applied if that comes first 2.
Mississippi has no standing diversion payment for ordinary applicants. The manual defines a TANF Up-Front Diversion (UD) program only as a one-time payment for low-income working families affected by a disaster, and it publishes no amount or open application period 7.
Income rules that change what a working parent keeps
To be eligible, gross income must be at or below the 185% standard, $1,074 for three people, and net income must then be below the 100% standard 31. When MDHS computes net income from earnings, it allows 4:
- a standard $90 deduction for work expenses;
- the actual cost of dependent care, unless a third party pays it;
- a six-month total earned income disregard, available once, for an adult who finds an unsubsidized job of 35 or more hours a week within 30 days of TANF approval or within 30 days of starting job readiness or job search in the work program. MDHS’s work program page adds that the job must pay at least the federal minimum wage 11;
- a three-month total disregard when higher earnings would otherwise close the case, if the person works at least 25 hours a week at minimum wage or more. It cannot be combined with the six-month disregard, but it can be used again after a 12-month break from assistance 4.
When a recipient marries, the new spouse’s income and resources are disregarded for six months 6. Child support goes through the state: you assign your support rights to MDHS, and collections first repay the TANF you received. Families with a support order can get a pass-through payment that MDHS disregards when it figures the grant, but the manual leaves the amount to MDHS and does not publish it 6.
Resources, the family benefit cap and drug screening
Countable resources cannot exceed $2,000. MDHS does not count the home the family lives in, most cars, trucks, vans and motorcycles, household goods of limited value, one burial plot per person, or a funeral agreement worth up to $1,500 per person 51.
Mississippi still applies a family benefit cap. The grant covers children who were already born or conceived when the family first applied. In practice, a child born after the first 10 benefit months is not added to the payment unless an exception applies 6. A capped child is still counted in the household. The caretaker must cooperate with child support for that child, the child’s own income (including child support) is not counted against the grant, and the family can get help with the child’s child care costs 6. A 2024 bill to repeal the cap, the up-front job search and drug testing, House Bill 582, died in committee 15.
Every adult in the case completes the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory (SASSI) questionnaire before approval. Refusing it means denial. If the results point to likely drug use, the adult must take a drug test, and a positive test means the adult has to stay in treatment to keep receiving TANF 6.
TANF Work Program hours, exemptions and supports
Adults who are not exempt are referred to the TANF Work Program (TWP) during the application process. They must register with Mississippi Works on the MDES website and give the case manager proof within 10 days. Adults who say they cannot work must complete an intake with Vocational Rehabilitation before the application can be approved 7. Once the case is approved, the Employability Development Plan sets your activities. These can include job search, employment, on-the-job training, work experience, community service, vocational education (no more than 12 months), or high school or GED classes if you are under 20 11.
The required weekly hours are 20 for a single parent whose youngest child is under 6, 30 for a single parent whose youngest child is 6 or older, and 55 combined for two parents. Two parents can drop to 35 hours if suitable child care is not available 8. You can be exempt if you have a disability, care for an ill or incapacitated person, are over 60 or under 18, are in the third trimester of a pregnancy with medical complications, are in substance abuse treatment, have a temporary disability lasting no more than 30 days, or have documented domestic violence (up to 12 months). The exemption for caring for a baby under 12 months can be used for only 12 months in a lifetime, no matter how many children you have 11.
TWP participants can get child care through the Child Care Payment Program, a transportation stipend of up to $300 a month where there is no transit system, and help paying for uniforms, tools and licenses 117. If earnings close your case, you can ask your case manager for Transitional Child Care for up to 24 months and Transitional Transportation for up to 18 months 7.
Mississippi’s 24-month and 60-month clocks
An adult can receive TANF for no more than 60 months in a lifetime. Children in child-only cases are not subject to that limit 6. State law adds a shorter limit. A work-eligible adult referred to TWP who is not assigned to an approved work activity is limited to 24 months. That 24-month counter runs alongside the 60-month counter and stops counting in any month the adult is assigned to an allowable activity 6. Months on the baby or domestic violence exemption count toward 60 months but not toward 24, until the exemption’s 12-month limit runs out 6.
Extensions beyond 60 months are narrow. They come in three-month blocks, with a face-to-face review every 90 days. They are only for adults who are incapacitated or who must care for an incapacitated child or adult, and only when household gross income is below the 100% need standard. Each county can extend no more than 20% of its countable cases 6. Adults in drug treatment, adults with temporary illness and adults who are required to work are closed in the 60th month 6.
Sanctions under Section 43-17-5 and how to lift them
If an adult refuses work activities without good cause, the whole family’s benefits stop. Under the statute, the sanction lasts two months or until the adult complies, whichever is longer, for a first violation. It is six months for a second violation and 12 months for a third. A fourth violation means permanent disqualification 159. Before applying a sanction, MDHS must offer conciliation and send a 10-day adverse action notice 9. Refusing to cooperate with child support also closes the case. That penalty has no minimum length: benefits restart once the Division of Child Support Enforcement confirms you are cooperating 6.
Applying through Access MS, step by step
Check eligibility
Use the Access MS eligibility questions, or compare your household against the $1,074 gross limit for three people 121.

A caseworker schedules your interview by mail or email. At the interview you sign the child support and personal responsibility forms and complete the SASSI questionnaire 126.
Complete TWP registration
Your eligibility worker books a TWP appointment within three days of referring you. Attend it, register with Mississippi Works, and turn in proof within 10 days 7.
Send requested documents
You can upload them on the MDHS document upload page, email, mail, fax or bring them in 12.
Watch for the decision
If you finish every step, MDHS must decide within 30 calendar days of receiving your application. If you are approved, benefits are loaded onto a Way2Go Debit Card 12.
Appeal if you disagree
You can ask for a hearing within 90 days after the advance notice period ends. If you ask within 10 days of a reduction or closure notice, benefits continue unchanged while you wait, unless the case closed because you reached the 60-month limit 10.
Child-only TANF and MDHS child support help
A grandparent, great-aunt or great-uncle, aunt, uncle, sibling, first cousin, niece or nephew age 18 or older who is raising a child can apply for a child-only case. The relative is listed as head of household, but the relative’s own income and assets are not counted and the relative does not have to meet TWP work rules. A child who receives SSI cannot also receive TANF. The maximum is $200 for one child, $236 for two and $260 for three 13.
The MDHS Division of Child Support Enforcement establishes paternity, locates parents, gets support orders through the courts, and collects and distributes payments. It waives the $25 application fee for families on TANF, SNAP or Medicaid, and it offers locate-only searches for free 14.
